Benzalkonium chloride (BZK) is classified as a quaternary ammonium compound. A known surfactant, BZK can act similarly to the molecules of common soaps in disassembling the structure of a virus casing. BZK solutions have been reviewed and approved for use against SARS-CoV-19 (nCoV-19, Covid-19) by the government of Canada, and quaternary ammoniums have been listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as potentially viable with the right washing method. At least 10 minutes of full contact should be sufficient.
